Just a quick thought……
When you read and study about Christ’s work on the Cross and the Gospel, it should always be taken for more than just good information. Further it is never to be read as a pitiful story that simply moves you like reading of a mother with five children who starved herself to feed them. The work of Christ is always to be read and studied as that which changes you. Jesus died because of my sins. He took my place on the Cross. He turned away the wrath of God so that I could be loved by God. He in His love died while I was still unlovely and acceptable to God. This is not just information. This is Medicine. This is the love story of the ages. He is Savior. If ever I can read the Gospel and go away from it without falling more in love with Christ, then He never held my affection as Savior. If I can read about His sacrifice and merely tip my hat to His work, then the love of God is not in me. But if I read of His sacrifice and the awareness of my debt which took His life compels me, then I know I am His and He is mine. If I read the Gospel and become sickened by sin, then I am conforming to His image. If I read the Gospel and a hunger and thirst to say, “Yes” to Christ overwhelms me, then I can be sure I am Christian.

On Saturday, the leaders had planned a block party to reach people in the community. Nate and I commented to one another, “What would it be like if instead of a free hug sign, to have a Free Prayer sign.” So we took a ratty piece of cardboard, wrote “Free Prayer” on it, and made our way to the street corner. Not knowing how we would conduct this ministry venue, we began to pass ideas back and forth. We prayed for every person who went by regardless of whether they acknowledged us. We waved at everyone while holding our sign. If anyone were to stop and request prayer, then we would writer their names down on the back of the sign.
In just a few minutes we could feel the Holy Spirit stretching us with joy and excitement. What started in a question, turned into being the best ministry moment of my life. Immediately a funeral procession passed by and one car load after another through the windows mouthed “thank you.” I was so struck by a young couple with a new born who pulled up to the corner, cracked their window, and the lady in the passenger side said, “just pray that we make it.” People were asking for prayer for their moms because they worked hard, friends because they had cancer, ex-wife, daughters who did not know Christ as Savior, marriages, and even a money order that was misprinted. As we prayed with people some of the students from the block party joined us for support. Then we met “Nila.” She drove by only to turn around and stop. She said, “Just last night I was planning my suicide. I have been struggling all morning and on my way home I was compelled to drive through downtown. Now, I know why. I need prayer. I know Jesus as my Savior, but there is so much darkness in my life and I am worn out. Would you pray for me?” We began to pray as she prayed with us. Such a powerful moment.
“For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon Him (Deut. 4:7)?” I never thought a sign with an invitation to be near God would be so compelling. Announce to someone today, Free Prayer. And join us in praying for those who God has sent our way.

A few nights ago my family accompanied some of our friends for dinner.  We went to a restaurant that just happens to be my least favorite.  Well, let me be honest, I despise this restaurant.  The food is overpriced, flavorless, and the wait staff is not up to par.  My entire attitude was spoiled in preparation to go to dinner.  Our friends were awesome, but I was the “Scrooge” of the whole evening.  My wife even nudged me under the table, to which I responded, “I am fully aware of my attitude.”  When dinner was finished we gave our salutations to our friends and I walked to the truck thankful for my friends, but begrudging the choice of restaurant and the money spent.  I jumped in my truck and immediately felt the conviction of the Holy Spirit.  The conviction was in reference to my willingness to put up such fuss over food choice when I so easily excuse my own sinfulness.  A flood of verses came back to mind and I here are a few of them;
Psalm 45:7 (ESV)
7 you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness.
Psalm 97:10 (ESV)
10      O you who love the LORD, hate evil!  He preserves the lives of his saints;
he delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
Proverbs 8:13 (ESV)
13 The fear of the LORD is hatred of evil.
Pride and arrogance and the way of evil
and perverted speech I hate.
Romans 12:9 (ESV)
9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.

Wow!! I sat for a moment thinking, ‘How can my whole disposition change over something so trivial, and so easily excuse the things that God hates.’ God hates sin, and often, I condone it. In matters of sin, I think I am like a person waiting for the weekend to splurge on their diet because they have been good all week. It is as though I say, “God, you know I have been really good, so I know you will not have a problem with this sin.” Once again, I realize I am not as far along in my relationship with God as I think I am. I caught a glimpse that there is more in my life that needs to be fulfilled by Christ. As Piper said, “God is most glorified when I am most satisfied in Him.” Satisfy my heart God, that I may glorify you.
How is your resistance to sin? Do you hate sin as much as you despise trivial things? Is Christ fulfilling you in order that life is solidly satisfying? Lord grant us to be complete in your righteousness. Let us begin to love what you love and hate what you hate. Be glorified by my satisfaction in you!!

This morning I was reminded of couplet of verses from Psalm 63:3-4:
Psalm 63:3–4 (ESV)
3 Because your steadfast love is better than life,
my lips will praise you.
4 So I will bless you as long as I live;
in your name I will lift up my hands.
I find in life I can get very accustomed to things that could really be gone in a moment. I get so wrapped up in them I find value and security in them rather than the God of my Salvation. The psalmist found the greatest sense of value and security not in his position as king, but he found his value and security in the steadfast (hesed) love of God. God’s love is the richest most satisfying gift we could encounter. The fullness of his steadfast love was expressed in His Son, Jesus and his death, burial, and resurrection. God’s love has given us so many great things that we have a tendency to say, “I need to do better.” Doing better only creates a vicious cycle of shame and guilt.
David found God’s love to cover our inability “to do better.” David instead of doing better found God’s long lasting to be sufficient for his life. It was better than all of he could do to make himself better, and in these verses you hear the voice of sweet surrender. David resigned to the power of God’s love by saying he would praise God with all of his life for the rest of his life. He found God’s love better than all of David’s life.
Surrender to God’s love today. Add these verses to your memory, and praise God for his love.

This Saturday begins a thirty-one day preaching marathon. Saturday will commence a week of more than 20 preaching opportunities. I am asking for you prayers and support as I will be able to share the Gospel with hundreds of students and adults. Saturday, I will preach at the Gladiator event put on by Lake Norman Christina and Pennisula Baptist church. Sunday, I will preach at Front Street Baptist with Tim Stutts, and will begin the Bonfire School Release. This week I will share the Gospel with students at West Middle and High. I will be preaching 3 times a day; twice in the morning and once in the evening. Please come if you are in the area. I will leave Wed. afternoon and head to Bonclarken for a Senior HIgh spiritual emphasis retreat. Friday night I will preach Beulah’s Fifth Quarter, and will finish the week at Harmony Camp Meeting. I am so privileged to have the opportunity to preach this week. Please pray that God will use me to rightly teach the Gospel. Pray for the harvest of souls and that God will use our local churches to follow up with these students who will respond to the Gospel. God is great and I trust that He will provide great things. Also please pray for my family as I will be away for them at times this week. Pray that the boys do well for Angie and that she has the strength to minister to our family in my absence. We love you guys and appreciate your support.
